This Astros Orioles Trade Might Be the Key to Keeping Bregman

The Houston Astros’ pursuit of free agent infielder Alex Bregman has taken several twists and turns this offseason. Initially, the Astros prioritized re-signing Bregman, but negotiations stalled, leading them to explore other options, including acquiring Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes. However, with Bregman’s free agency still unresolved, the Astros have re-entered the bidding, currently considered frontrunners despite Bregman’s apparent hesitation to accept their reported $156 million offer.

One potential strategy for the Astros to free up funds for Bregman involves trading starting pitcher Framber Valdez. The Baltimore Orioles, having lost Corbin Burnes, are a prime candidate, needing a top-tier pitcher like Valdez.

The proposed trade would send Valdez to Baltimore in exchange for two outfield prospects: Heston Kjerstad and Dylan Beavers.

  • Heston Kjerstad: The 25-year-old outfielder, who hit .253/.351/.394 with four home runs in 99 at-bats last season, faces limited playing time in Baltimore. He is considered to have plus power and a solid hit tool.
  • Dylan Beavers: The 23-year-old outfielder, who split the 2024 season between Double-A and Triple-A, batting .242/.342/.408, is projected to begin 2025 in Triple-A. He is considered to have plus tools across the board.

This trade offers significant advantages for the Astros. It not only offloads Valdez’s contract, creating financial flexibility, but also addresses their need for outfield depth following the trade of Kyle Tucker. For the Orioles, acquiring Valdez provides the ace pitcher they currently lack.
