Cubs Acquire Ryan Brasier in Trade with Dodgers

Veteran reliever Ryan Brasier is heading to a new team after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers last week.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Dodgers have traded the 37-year-old right-hander to the Chicago Cubs. Brasier spent the past two seasons in Los Angeles after a midseason trade in 2023.

Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2007, Brasier made his MLB debut in 2013 but appeared in just seven games before an extended stint away from the majors. After spending several years in the minor leagues, he played in Japan for the 2017 season before making a successful return to MLB in 2018.

Brasier joined the Boston Red Sox in 2018 and was an integral part of their World Series-winning bullpen that season. He made nine postseason appearances during Boston’s championship run, posting a 1.04 ERA with seven strikeouts over 8.2 innings.

Midway through the 2023 season, the Red Sox traded Brasier to the Dodgers, where he thrived. He made 39 appearances for Los Angeles, recording an impressive 0.70 ERA.

Last season, Brasier pitched in 29 games, finishing with a 3.54 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. He also appeared in eight postseason games, including two starts, compiling a 5.00 ERA over nine innings.

Although the Dodgers no longer had room for him in their bullpen, Brasier is expected to play a key role for the Cubs, providing valuable middle-inning relief.
