Mike Florio discussed the upcoming contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy is eligible for an extension after his rookie contract, which has been a significant financial advantage for the 49ers. While many anticipate Purdy becoming one of the league’s highest-paid players, Florio suggests a more cautious approach.
Florio stated he wouldn’t sign Purdy to a big extension this year, preferring to see him play another season. He suggests offering a contract based on his current performance, rather than immediately jumping to top-tier quarterback money. He speculated a potential offer in the $35-40 million range, significantly lower than the current market of around $60 million per year.
Florio’s hesitation stems from Purdy’s somewhat inconsistent performance. While he achieved remarkable success early in his career, leading the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance, his 2024 season saw a dip in production due to injuries. This raises questions about whether he truly warrants a top-dollar contract.
Purdy’s 2024 stats (3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 96.1 passer rating) were all lower than his record-breaking 2023 season. The 49ers also struggled, finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs. Florio believes another year of evaluation is necessary before committing a large portion of the salary cap to Purdy.
