Detroit Still in Former Lions CBs Heart as He Chases Super Bowl Glory

Darius Slay, known for his outspoken nature, shared his fond memories of Detroit during Super Bowl week. Despite a difficult exit spurred by former coach Matt Patricia, Slay expressed nothing but love for the Lions, the team that gave him his NFL chance. He emphasized his continued support for the franchise, except when playing against them.

Slay’s time in Detroit (2013-2020) saw him develop into “Big Play Slay,” earning All-Pro honors and two Pro Bowl selections. He started 94 games and recorded 19 interceptions for the Lions. The trade that sent him to Philadelphia in 2020 ultimately yielded players who are no longer with the Lions.

Since joining the Eagles, Slay has maintained a high level of play, making the Pro Bowl in three of five seasons. He’s hinted at retirement after this season and hopes to finish his career with the Eagles. He will have a Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Slay reminisced about his time in Detroit, acknowledging the positive influence of leaders, coaches like Jim Caldwell, and mentors like Calvin Johnson. He credited Johnson for helping him become a top cornerback, stating that if he could defend Calvin, he could defend anyone. He also looks forward to facing the Lions one last time next season in Philadelphia.
