Steelers Make Smart Move Sign Wilson at Market Value

Russell Wilson, one of two quarterbacks entering free agency this offseason, has publicly expressed his desire to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He stated his focus is solely on the Steelers and that he “loves it in Pittsburgh.”

However, his return depends on contract negotiations. Gerry Dulac reports the Steelers’ comfort zone for a Wilson contract is between $20 and $25 million annually. If Wilson seeks more, he’ll have to look elsewhere.

Wilson’s 2024 season saw him go 6-6 in 12 starts, throwing for 2482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. A potential obstacle to his return is his relationship with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Dulac reports that Smith limited Wilson’s ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage, creating friction due to differing offensive philosophies. Wilson prefers a pass-heavy, downfield attack, while Smith prioritizes the run.

Despite the potential conflict, the Steelers have begun contract talks with Wilson and Justin Fields’ representatives, according to team owner Art Rooney II. Wilson, a 10-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, is 36 years old.
