The Seattle Kraken faced a tough game against the Calgary Flames, ultimately losing after falling behind by three goals. Several controversial calls and reviews marked the first period.
A Kraken goal by Jaden Schwartz was overturned due to goaltender interference, as Schwartz made contact with the goalie’s stick while scoring. Later, a legal hit on Andre Burakovsky led to a double minor penalty for roughing against Jared McCann, which indirectly resulted in a Flames goal. Yegor Sharangovich’s shot slipped under the goalie’s legs, and despite Jamie Oleksiak’s slashing penalty on the play, the goal stood because it was offset by McCann’s existing penalty.
A Kraken challenge for goaltender interference on Sharangovich’s goal was risky, as a failed challenge would result in a delay of game penalty, compounding Oleksiak’s slashing call and creating a 5-on-3 power play for Calgary. The league ruled that Sharangovich’s contact was a continuation of play, not interference, leading to a Flames power-play goal and a 3-0 deficit for Seattle.
Kaapo Kakko scored for Seattle late in the second period, assisted by Josh Mahura, making the score 3-1. Despite the efforts, Seattle couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The game was marked by uneven officiating, particularly regarding the calls on goaltender interference.
