In a stunning offseason move, the San Francisco 49ers have traded star wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. This blockbuster deal sends Samuel to Washington, D.C., where he’ll join forces with newly drafted quarterback Jayden Daniels, and reunite with former 49ers executive Adam Peters.
The move comes after Samuel requested a trade during his end-of-season meeting with head coach Kyle Shanahan, citing a desire to pursue new opportunities. 49ers General Manager John Lynch confirmed the team would honor his request. The Commanders will absorb the remainder of Samuel’s contract, including his $17.55 million salary for the 2025 season.

San Francisco had seemingly prepared for Samuel’s departure, drafting receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the recent NFL Draft. Additionally, the team secured contract extensions for Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk. This isn’t the first time Samuel’s future with the 49ers has been in question. He previously requested a trade in 2022 during a contract dispute, ultimately signing a three-year deal. The 49ers also entertained offers for both Samuel and Aiyuk during the latter’s contract negotiations.

Samuel, a 2019 second-round pick, enjoyed a breakout 2021 season, earning All-Pro honors. However, his production has declined in recent years, culminating in a 2023 season with 51 catches, 670 yards, and three touchdowns. Despite this, several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans, expressed interest in acquiring him. Ultimately, the Commanders, under head coach Dan Quinn, secured Samuel, providing a significant boost to their offense and quarterback Jayden Daniels.
