Rumors are circulating that Mikko Rantanen’s tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes may be short-lived. Despite the widely discussed trade that brought Rantanen to Carolina in exchange for Jack Drury and Martin Necas, concerns have arisen about the Hurricanes’ ability to retain him long-term.
Paul Bissonnette, on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, suggested that Carolina might only have Rantanen for a three-month “rental,” predicting he will command a salary the Hurricanes can’t afford to pay, similar to their previous experience with Jake Guentzel. Guentzel, acquired by the Hurricanes last year, ultimately left for the Tampa Bay Lightning after contract negotiations stalled.
Bissonnette’s hot take implies that Rantanen’s contract demands will be too high for Carolina. However, he didn’t factor in the projected rise of the NHL salary cap, which could give the Hurricanes more financial flexibility to re-sign Rantanen. Hurricanes fans are hoping the team can avoid repeating the Guentzel situation and successfully secure Rantanen’s future with the franchise.
