Could a Blockbuster Trade Happen Between Avalanche and Islanders

The New York Islanders and Colorado Avalanche are reportedly considering a trade involving Brock Nelson and Casey Mittelstadt.

Matt Larkin of Daily Faceoff suggests the Islanders, despite recent wins, might benefit from trading pending UFA’s like Nelson and Kyle Palmieri. A potential swap with Colorado for Mittelstadt could provide cost certainty and prevent losing Nelson for nothing. The Islanders are currently dealing with injuries to key players like Noah Dobson, Mathew Barzal, and Ryan Pulock.

Nelson is considered a likely trade candidate, and the Avalanche, uncertain about Mittelstadt’s long-term role, might be willing to make a move. They are likely looking for rentals to aid their Stanley Cup Playoff push.

Mittelstadt has 32 points in 55 games this season and is signed through 2026-27 with a $5.75 million AAV. He has no trade protection until the final year of his contract. Nelson carries a $6 million cap hit, has a 16-team no-trade list, and has 33 points in 53 games this season.
