J.J. McCarthy Wants Chance to Compete for Vikings Starting QB Job

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation is uncertain after a surprising 2024 season. Drafted to be the franchise quarterback, J.J. McCarthy missed the entire season due to a preseason knee injury requiring two surgeries. In his absence, Sam Darnold exceeded expectations, leading the Vikings to a 14-3 record and a playoff appearance.  

Darnold will be a free agent, but the Vikings are likely to re-sign him. This leaves McCarthy’s future with the team unclear. Coach Kevin O’Connell is optimistic about McCarthy’s recovery but hasn’t committed to him as the 2025 starter.

McCarthy, on The Rich Eisen Show, expressed his desire for a “fair opportunity” to compete for the starting role. He acknowledged the complexities of the situation, particularly regarding money and playing time, but emphasized his focus on controlling what he can.  

The Vikings’ quarterback situation will be a key storyline in the offseason. If they retain Darnold, a quarterback competition between him and McCarthy is likely for the 2025 season.
