Polanco Gets 7.75 Million in One Year Deal with Mariner

SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners and infielder Jorge Polanco officially agreed to a one-year, $7.75 million contract on Monday.

Polanco, a versatile 31-year-old who can play second base, shortstop, and third base, had a down year in 2024, hitting a career-low .213 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs in 118 games. He also spent time on the injured list between May 27 and June 24 due to a hamstring strain.

A 2019 All-Star, Polanco’s career batting average is .263, with 128 home runs and 492 RBIs over 11 seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2014-2023) and the Mariners.

He originally signed a five-year, $25.75 million contract with the Twins in February 2019. After Minnesota exercised his $10.5 million option for 2024, they traded him to Seattle in January of that year, receiving pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa, along with minor leaguers Gabriel Gonzalez (outfielder) and Darren Brown (pitcher). As part of the trade, Minnesota also paid Seattle $8 million.

The Mariners declined Polanco’s $12 million option for 2025, opting instead for a $750,000 buyout, which made him a free agent.

In a separate move, the Mariners acquired right-handed pitcher Casey Legumina from the Cincinnati Reds for cash. To make room on the roster, outfielder Cade Marlowe and left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Díaz were designated for assignment.
