NEW YORK – Right-handed reliever Ryne Stanek has agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Mets, according to a source who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the deal is pending a physical and official announcement. MLB.com was the first to report Stanek’s return to the team.
Stanek, 33, was acquired by the Mets from the Seattle Mariners at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas. He had a 6.06 ERA in 17 regular season appearances with the Mets but proved to be a valuable asset in the postseason. Over seven playoff games, he pitched eight innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight batters.
He will join a Mets bullpen that already features closer Edwin Diaz and left-handed set-up man A.J. Minter.
