The Cleveland Indians’ return to postseason play after a 28-year absence was a triumphant one. The 1948 Indians, led by shortstop-manager and AL MVP Lou Boudreau, boasted an impressive roster, including five future Hall of Fame members. Alongside Boudreau were outfielder Larry Doby, who broke the American League’s color barrier, and pitchers Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, and 42-year-old rookie and former Negro league star Satchel Paige. (In 1975, the Cleveland Indians furthered their commitment to diversity by making Frank Robinson the first African American manager in Major League Baseball.) The Indians finished the 1948 regular season tied with the Boston Red Sox, whom they then defeated in the first-ever one-game playoff in major league history. They went on to beat the Boston Braves in six games, securing their second World Series championship.
