The Reason Payton Pritchard Rejected an All-Star Weekend Invitation

Payton Pritchard explained his decision to decline the All-Star Weekend opportunity, citing the need for rest and relaxation. “I mean, I love playing basketball but I do like a break occasionally,” Pritchard admitted. “I’m gonna be nice on the beach, chilling, being with friends and family so I take it in. I am like a normal kid at the end of the day. … I go and relax, do normal things. Have good meals, maybe have a drink. I don’t know.”

Pritchard’s desire for a break is understandable given his rigorous offseason training regimen, which included daily full-court defensive press drills and 1-on-1 sessions. This dedication to improving his defense has not only benefited Pritchard personally but has also positively impacted the Boston Celtics. The team even adopted Pritchard’s full-court pressure drill and incorporated it into their early-season practices.

While Pritchard won’t be showcasing his shooting skills at the All-Star 3-Point Contest, he’s clearly prioritizing rest and recovery to be at his best for the playoffs. The 2025 Starry 3-Point Contest, which will feature Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, Darius Garland, Tyler Herro, Buddy Hield, Cameron Johnson, Damian Lillard, and Norman Powell, will proceed without him. Pritchard’s focus remains on the bigger picture: contributing to the Celtics’ playoff run.
